Why is good food hygiene important in the care home

Why is good food hygiene important in the care home? People of an advanced age are more susceptible to food related illnesses compared to the general population. One of the most important things to consider in a care home is their food hygiene practices.

Respite care homes are required to have a written Food Safety Management System (FSMS). This must go into detail regarding how the food is produced. Also, it must identify food safety hazards and what is needed in order to minimize hazards. Smaller residential care homes have the option to use a Safer Food, Better Business (SFBB) and a Residential Care Homes Supplement for their food safety procedures and food hygiene regulations.

The information provided by care homes in the FSMS and the SFBB is based upon the 4 C’s of food hygiene and safety management. These are cross contamination, chilling, cleaning, and cooking. It is essential that care homes strictly follow all four in order to ensure the safety of its residents.
